When "the dead" are on the other end of the line...
By S. Alexander Hardison
Cal Cooper, the brilliant young parapsychologist from England, has gifted us with the fruits of his laborious studies into "phone call phenomena". Despite the somewhat provocative title, Mr. Cooper makes it clear that the true nature of the phenomena is not really understood and all the occurrences might have completely natural explanations. With that being said, he considers a great many possible explanations for the phenomena throughout the book, (varying from case to case) from possible (and sometimes probable) psychological explanations, to paranormal ones. Additionally, non-paranormal, but equally unorthodox explanations from some of the call Types are briefly considered.

Cooper separates all of the phone calls into 5 distinct "types". One of the types (Type 5) seems to involve cases where living people have the intention to call a particular person about a particular topic, but they never do. However, the person they intended to call later informs the person that they had received the call that they originally intended to make. In this sense, the title of the book can seem to be a bit of a misnomer. Cooper makes it clear that he does not feel any emotional attachment to any theory of the phenomena, but is totally willing to follow the evidence wherever it may lead. This is a truly scientific approach and needs to be adopted by a great many more academics.

Particularly enjoyable, to myself at least, was Chapter 8 (the theoretical chapter). It is there that Cooper proposes many of the more "unorthodox normal explanations" as possible solutions to some of the cases. I will leave it to the reader to read what these are. I agree wholeheartedly with Cal when he says that the phenomena, whatever their explanation may prove to be, warrant in depth study. These aspects of our experience could potentially reveal a great many of the "secrets" of what it means to be human; even if the belief in their paranormality is not warranted, their potential for shedding more light on human psychology is a near certainty.

I recommend reading "Telephone Calls from the Dead" and forming your own conclusions -or better still, without forming any conclusions and using it, with the book by Scott Rogo and Raymond Bayless called "Phone Calls from the Dead", as a firm base for the foundation of your own research.

Very good book, very interesting
By C. Good
Cooper's book _Telephone Calls from the Dead_ is an attempt to collect and analyze accounts of people who feel they may have received telephone calls from people who are dead. The book is a continuation of research published in 1979 by Rogo and Bayless, _Phone Calls from the Dead_.

_Telephone Calls from the Dead_ is quite an interesting book, both in the accounts that have been collected, and also in the method he uses to analyze them. Cooper explains that "parapsychology" is not just the study of strange events, but the study of why those strange events happened to a particular person at a particular time.

So, in many cases, Cooper is quite open to the possibility that some accounts are hallucinations or dreams, particularly if the person who received the call was grieving for someone they had lost. Cooper also does a very thorough job of looking at other psychological effects -- such as bereavement -- when analyzing different accounts.

There is a lot of historical research in the book, and Cooper recounts how anomalous messages have been received over electric communication for quite some time, including an account in 1915 of a wireless telegraph producing messages in Morse code when no messages were being sent and even then the receiving antenna was disconnected. When it comes to telephones, there have been accounts of unusual messages for almost as long as telephones have existed.

Cooper breaks the calls into different categories and follows up with the people who reported the experience whenever possible. He also has a chapter where he talks about cases that don't really fit into any of the categories, and another chapter for telephone-related messages that are allegedly from the dead, such as voicemail and text messages.

As he goes through his research, Cooper discusses some of the overall views of parapsychology, both within parapsychology itself and from other branches of science. Even if you are not particularly interested in whether the dead can contact the living via telephone, I would recommend the book just the for the discussions of parapsychology, whether it is just a study of phenomena or a study of why phenomena are alleged to have happened to a particular person at a particular place and time, and whether criticism from other branches of science actually focus on scientific rigor of the research or focus more on whether there is a scientifically-accepted explanation for the phenomena at this time.

A very good book, very interesting to read.

You did a great job carrying forward Rogo and Bayless work!

Callum I authored the popular selling book Speaking to the Dead with Radios also available here at Amazon. Finally I was able to read your book. I have been home recovering from Cancer surgery. I want you to know that I was very impressed with your follow on from Rogo and Bayless Phone Calls from the Dead. You did a great job carrying it forward. As you know I use radio sweep technology to record audio messages from the dead, a process the scientific community doesn't agree is valid. For quite some time now I have been fascinated with the idea of receiving a phone call from the dead. Early this year, I assembled two 1970 era table top telephones connecting them as in intercom system with the power source provided from a Lap Top Computer power brick. I have tried repeatedly to summon Konstantin Raudive to ring my phone setup, so I could record any messages that came through. I have a suction cup microphone hooked up to the receiver of one of the phones. Note that these phones are stand-alone and are not hooked up to the telephone system. Sadly to date I have received no rings or call. If I do get a call, and if I am able to establish a repeatable process, I will give you all my work so you can try it yourself in a controlled environment. Well done my friend, and I wish you the best!
