Chapter One: Stain Removers That Are Hiding in Your Cupboard

Some of the very best spot and stain removers are things you use every single day! These stain removers work great and they're right at your fingertips!

Alcohol: Rubbing alcohol is great for grass stains and so much more.

    Ammonia: The perspiration stain fighter.

Automatic dishwasher detergent: Keep this on hand as a bleach substitute and whitener/ brightener even if you don't have a dishwasher. Liquid, powder, and tablet form all work well. If you choose the tablet, make sure it has dissolved before you add clothes. Pour directly on stain, or soak.

    Baking soda: Removes odors.

Club soda: My favorite Oh my gosh, how did I do that? spotter. Use it on any fabric or surface that can be treated with water. A slight dabbing on dry-clean-only fabrics is also permissible, just be sure to test first! Use club soda on any spill -- ask the waiter for some if you're dining out -- dab it on and blot it off. Club soda keeps spills from becoming stains and brings the offending spill to the surface so it can be easily removed. It's totally safe. I always make sure to have a bottle on hand.

Cream of tartar: I bet you have some of this in the kitchen cupboard, but how often do you use it? Well, here's your chance. Mix cream of tartar with lemon juice and you have a wonderful bleach for white clothes spotted with food or other stains. It's even effective on many rust stains.

Denture-cleaning tablets: The cure-all for white table linens with food stains and white cotton with stains. Dissolve one tablet per 1/2 cup water. Pour directly on stain or spot.

Dishwashing liquid: A wonderful spotter, used undiluted on tough stains.

Glycerin: You can remove tar, tree sap (think Christmas tree), juice stains, mustard, ketchup and barbecue sauce.

GOJO Crème Waterless Hand Cleaner®: Totally awesome for removing grease and oil, including shoe polish.

Hydrogen peroxide: 3 percent hydrogen peroxide is super for removing bloodstains, especially if they are fairly fresh. It also is a wonderful bleaching agent for stubborn stains on white clothes. Combine 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon of ammonia for an unbeatable stain removal combination. Make sure to use 3 percent and not the kind you use to bleach your hair!

Lemon juice: This is nature's bleach and disinfectant. I don't know where we'd be without it. If you have spots on white clothes, apply some lemon juice and lay them in the sun. Apply a little more lemon juice prior to laundering, or prespray and launder as usual. This is really effective on baby formula stains.

Meat tenderizer: A combo of meat tenderizer (unseasoned, please, or you'll have a whole new stain!) and cold water is just the answer to protein-based stains such as blood, milk, etc.

Salt: Sprinkling salt on spilled red wine will keep the wine from staining until you can launder it. Mixed with lemon juice, salt will remove mildew stains.

Shampoo: Any brand will do. Cheap is fine. I save the small bottles from hotel/motel stays and keep them in the laundry room. Great for treating ring-around-the-collar, mud and cosmetic stains.

Shave cream: That innocent-looking can of shave cream in your bathroom is one of the best spot and stain removers available. That's because it's really whipped soap! If you have a spill on your clothes (or even your carpet), moisten the spot, work in some shave cream, and then flush it with cool water. If the offending spot is on something you're wearing, work the shave cream in and then use a clean cloth (a washcloth works fine) to blot the shave cream and the spot away. A quick touch of the blow-dryer to prevent a ring and you're on your way. The best thing about shave cream is that even if it doesn't work it won't set the stain, so the spot can still be removed later. Keep a small sample can in your suitcase when you travel. It's saved me more than once!

WD-40 Lubricant®: Check out your garage or the "fix-it" cupboard. If you don't have any, pick up a can the next time you're at the hardware store or home center. Why? Because we've all had those nasty grease stains and oil stains on clothes: Salad dressing misses the salad and gets the blouse, or grease splatters when you are cooking -- or crayon/lipstick/Chap Stick® gets on your clothes! WD-40 is your answer. Spray some on, wait 10 minutes, and then work in undiluted liquid dishwashing soap and launder as usual. Works well on everything except silk!

White vinegar: A great spotter for suede -- used undiluted. It's also a wonderful fabric softener. Just put 1/4 cup white vinegar in the final rinse. (And no, you won't smell like a salad!)

It's worthwhile to keep these things on hand. As you can see, most are inexpensive and have other uses. They'll make you the laundry Queen -- or King! -- in your home.

Compared to the other books I received in this order, this one was very small with yellowed pulp type pages. The book's content may still be fine but the book itself looks very dated.

    By MLSchoenfeld
I decided that I'd like to buy a guide to stains for the laundry room. I started by checking out some books at the library. I wanted to see some stain books in person, to make my decision.

Stain Rescue! The A to Z Guide, by Good Housekeeping was not my choice. Too many of the entries told me to simply, "use a commercial stain remover." Well, I could have guessed that. I wanted specific advice for each type of stain. This book said to treat all laundry stains the same way, with a commercial stain remover, and only gave specific advice if the stain is on carpet, upholstery, etc. Not for me.

The Field Guide to Stains DID have specific advice, but was also a little too "fluffy" for me. The little bits of humor -- there were simply too many of them for my taste -- seemed to get in the way of the great information. There was a section of color photos showing what stains look like, but I think I can usually tell what the stain is by looking. That might be very helpful to some.

I continued to seek my stain guide. Next, I checked out the little paperback Queen of Clean book. It was published in 2002. There was specific advice for each type of stain. I was also pleased to read about the many common household items can be used to treat stains. And there is a section about commercial cleaning products. The Queen recommends her favorites -- and she's "tried them all." There were specific recommendations about each.

There is also a section that gives a heirarchy of stain removal when the stain is unknown, or set in with age. You start with the most gentle cleaning methods, then gradually work your way up to things that are more and more effective, but also irreversible and risky. That way, you might get the stain out with less trouble and less damage to the garment before you have to use the more drastic methods.

The Queen also warns in many places that some stain removers might remove the dye from some garments. The advice is to test on a seam allowance or other inconspicuous place. How many times have I removed the dye, along with the stain, by using a commercial cleaning product? That's why I wanted specific advice and gentle stain removal.

Well, all that sounded good to me! I decided that this will be the stain guide I keep in my laundry room. I came to Amazon, and found out that there's a 2010 edition. That's even better. I'm gettin' it right away!

Programming .NET Security: Writing Secure Applications Using C# or Visual Basic .NET, by Adam Freeman, Allen Jones

With the spread of web-enabled desktop clients and web-server based applications, developers can no longer afford to treat security as an afterthought. It's one topic, in fact, that .NET forces you to address, since Microsoft has placed security-related features at the core of the .NET Framework. Yet, because a developer's carelessness or lack of experience can still allow a program to be used in an unintended way, Programming .NET Security shows you how the various tools will help you write secure applications. The book works as both a comprehensive tutorial and reference to security issues for .NET application development, and contains numerous practical examples in both the C# and VB.NET languages. With Programming .NET Security, you will learn to apply sound security principles to your application designs, and to understand the concepts of identity, authentication and authorization and how they apply to .NET security. This guide also teaches you to:

    • use the .NET run-time security features and .NET security namespaces and types to implement best-practices in your applications, including evidence, permissions, code identity and security policy, and role based and Code Access Security (CAS) use the .NET cryptographic APIs , from hashing and common encryption algorithms to digital signatures and cryptographic keys, to protect your data.
    • use COM+ component services in a secure manner
If you program with ASP.NET will also learn how to apply security to your applications. And the book also shows you how to use the Windows Event Log Service to audit Windows security violations that may be a threat to your solution.Authors Adam Freeman and Allen Jones, early .NET adopters and long-time proponents of an "end-to-end" security model, based this book on their years of experience in applying security policies and developing products for NASDAQ, Sun Microsystems, Netscape, Microsoft, and others. With the .NET platform placing security at center stage, the better informed you are, the more secure your project will be.

    Out-of-date but still useful
    By Timmy_A
Programming .NET Security covers 2 major topics of .NET Security: Code Access Security (CAS) and Cryptography. (CAS) was highly advertised feature of .NET when first editions of framework were released. Main goal of CAS was to provide highly configurable way how to protect your applications against malicious code. CAS as it was designed became quite complex and the book did a great job to explain how it works and how can be configured. Part 2 is mostly devoted into this technology. Unfortunately complexity of CAS forced Microsoft to change it substantially. Form .NET version 4.0 many parts of CAS are deprecated now. Especially Security Policy which was completely removed from the framework. So chapters 8 and 9 dealing about Security Policy are obsolete now. Chapter 6 Evidence and Code Identity is partly valid (Evidences are still part of .NET but because of Security Policy removal their importance is lower). Chapter 7 dealing with Permissions is mostly valid - just few methods of Permission class became obsolete. Chapters 10 and 11 (Role-Based Security, Isolated Storage) are completely valid in .NET 4.5 and provide good intro into these technologies.

Part 3 is all about Cryptography. This is the most useful part of the book covering Hashing, Symmetric and Asymmetric algorithms, Key exchange and Digital signatures. All cryptography classes presented in the book are part of latest edition of framework just few more algorithms have been added. Cryptography chapters are not useful just for their API coverage, but also because they provide excellent introduction to cryptography itself. Algorithms are presented in understandable way with nice, clean figures.

Part 4 is about security aspects of ASP.NET, COM+ and Log service. Honestly just last chapter (Log service) is useful. Coverage of ASP.NET and COM+ is just on very basic level and COM+ is now in fact dead technology. Last part is reference to all security-related classes. These chapters are not much useful. MSDN documentation is sufficient.

The book uses similar pattern in most chapters. First few pages in each one give you theoretical introduction into technology. After that, there is a presentation of corresponding .NET API and most chapters are finished with complete solution how to customize presented technology. For instance the book contains implementation of custom symmetric and asymmetric algorithms. This pattern is little bit 'dry' especially in Part 2 and 4 but very helpful in cryptography chapters where solid theoretical background is must before you can move to API.

So, I can say, that even 10 years after publication some parts of Programming .NET Security are still valuable. Especially part 3 Cryptography is perfectly valid in .NET 4.5. If you need to use cryptography in your projects, the book gives you great intro into it.

ALERT - This is a must have book!!
    By Rex
You really are not a true .NET Programmer until you understand the security mechanisms that are part and parcel with the framework. To program in .NET (or really any component-oriented technology) without security in mind is like parachuting without one strapped to your back.
I was waiting for a book like this. Before this book I've had to scour over the internet to try to find out how to get the different areas of security in .NET to work. Now it's all here in one book. The theory, the explanations, the warnings, the samples. If you are a serious .NET programmer or .NET policy administrator then this is a must have book. If you don't know the difference between "host evidence" and "assembly evidence", then you need this book. If you don't know the difference between a "security demand" and a "permission request", then you are dangerous to the people you do work for.
Also, make sure you know the basics already of the language and the framework since this book assumes you do. Good luck.

Best .NET security book I've seen
    By ueberhund
While there is a lot of talk about .NET security, relatively little can be found in terms of documentation, which is one reason why this book is so refreshing. In addition to discussing some of the reasons behind certain security schemes, the theory is explained as well as the C# implementation. While there are some .NET specific security issues discussed (e.g. configuring worker processes), the section on cryptography should be required reading for everyone in the computer industry.
I get really excited about a book when it contains a lot of good information and I am able to actually use it to solve real-world problems. After reading this book, I was able to help solve a really tricky (and politically challenging) security issue quite quickly. If you have anything to do with your company's security systems or write any .NET code, I think this book deserves a place in your reference section. This is certainly the best book on .NET security I have read thus far.

some interesting stuff, but wordy would be an understatement
    By Daniel Mackler
Strong points: THIS is fascinating stuff about schizoid personalities (emotionally detached, withdrawn personalities), and though Guntrip doesn't always say so, I think in varying degrees it's relevant to pretty much everyone I know...in terms of people's emotions being split off from their conscious selves (thus the schism). also: the occasional chunk of strong case material.
WEAK POINTS: are you willing to wade through hundreds of pages of literal word-noise and jargon to get his underlying points, which he seems to make over and over and over and over and over again in a million slightly different ways?
if you're the type of person who has trouble skimming and feels obligated to read every word, I would recommend this book as a good remedy for insomnia.

Sasaki Roshi once told me that "There is no love and Zen
    By Edward G. Muzika
One of the most profound books on the Self ever written+. I don't think Guntrip himself was aware of hos this book is relevant to understanding Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta, and my own background of Zen. Sasaki Roshi once told me that "There is no love and Zen." That is, emotions are observed, not denied or joined, but simply observed and thus never brought into one's sense of Self. Ditto all the other schools of Buddhism from Vipassana that watches and micro-introspects everything, to the various Theravadin and Mahayana traditions of transcendence of Self (and attachments) to become free from "suffering and distress.'

Advaita identifies the Self either as the disinterested Witness, or as unity Consciousness with no boundaries between self and object.

In other words, hs posited schizoid position was the cultural norm in ancient India, China, Japan, as well as the Theravadin Buddhist countries, and their spiritual practices are now being used in the West by those Westerners caught at the schizoid level of development.

a must read for any scholar of Jewish and/or Christian messianism
    By David A. Baer
Four densely argued chapters argue for a coherent and pervasive messianic concept in the Old Testament and subsequent Jewish literature in a way that cuts across recent trends in the field. Horbury's first chapter ("Messianism and the Old Testament") lays out the case for a messianism that grows organically out of the Old Testament materials from earliest times. While not rigid, a coherent messianic myth probably existed from the early monarchy. Far from being an insignificant concept, the 'widespread currency of the unexplained technical term' for 'Messiah' together with fuller designations had spread across several languages by at least the second century BC, coherently referring to a 'rightful ruler of Israel ... the coming Davidic king'. This chapter complements analysis of the textual inventory with attention to 'landmarks in the study of the origins of messianism.' The argument is advanced that the supposed mutual incompatibility between God's unmediated rule and Messiah's rule which has much occupied scholars is a false dichotomy, since the texts show little concern to exclude one while focussing upon the other. The editing of the individual biblical books reflects a messianic preoccupation that encourages finding in the canon a 'coherent series of messianic prophecies'. This circumstance fomented both the reading of still further oracles in this light and greater specificity as the tradition advanced. Such a development of the tradition will have been influenced by forms familiar to Israel's cultural neighbours, as by the presence of 'messianic prototypes' within the Bible itself (Moses, David, et al.).

The second instalment of Horbury's argument ('The Prevalence of Messianism in the Second-Temple Period') maintains the focus on the period during which the biblical materials were edited and collected but allows its attention to move beyond the biblical literature. Horbury contests the view that messianism had all but died out the Roman period in Judea, arguing instead that messianic hope was 'more continuously vigorous and widespread' than the scholarly tradition represented by R.H. Charles and C.H. Dodd would allow. The royalist and Davidic messianism of Chronicles and other late biblical materials is recognised, as is messianic inclination in the Septuagint. Further, the 'relatively non-messianic Apocrypha' are placed alongside 'outspokenly messianic' sections of the LXX and the abundant messianism of Ecclesiasticus, I Maccabees, and others, the silence of the former group being presented as understandable in prose historical narrative, as is true also of the biblical tradition itself. Even when not overtly messianic however, 'hagiographical presentations' in historical narrative 'surround contemporary rulers with a messianic atmosphere', a resource that is then exploited in explicitly messianic manner by prayer and apocalypse. The Qumran materials come into play because messianic expectation appears across the spectrum of that sectarian library. Thus, the literatures of the Second Temple period develop the messianic myth widely and deeply, attesting to the vigorous prevalence of messianism in a period which is often described as silent on the very point.

Even if messianic hope was as widespread as Horbury seeks to demonstrate, it may still have been insufficiently coherent to exert strong influence. The burden of ch. 3 ('The Coherence of Messianism') is to prove that messianic expectation clustered discernibly around the concept of a specifically royal messiah. Indeed, messianism is not so much abstract and notional as it is a reflection upon the real-life kings and rulers whom Jews knew, expectation for a Davidic ruler emerging out of 'the tree-stump of scriptural texts'. Horbury argues for the coherence of messianism from five angles, two of these positive and the rest negative. First, monarchy is central and programmatic, the idea of it being applied to rulers who lived prior to David and to some who were patriarchs, judges, and priests rather than actual kings. Second, the exuberance of non-Jewish ruler-cult was not universally rejected by Jews and, notwithstanding ambiguity as to its appropriateness, may have made its own contribution to Jewish 'praise of their rulers and ... depictions of their messianic king.' Third, the notion of God as sole and exclusive saviour seems not to have been taken by the authors of Second Temple literature as exclusive of human or celestial mediators. Silence as to messianism in 'God alone' passages 'was fully compatible with recognition of the activity of a king or messiah'. Fourth, the literature displays an ability to integrate expressions of angelic and human activity rather than to play the two phenomena off against each other. Biblical literature and its interpreters 'co-ordinate' the two modes of expression in a way which allows for mutual compatibility. Finally, descriptions of angelic figures and their superhuman characteristics occur more frequently in the literature than is often allowed, a phenomenon which depends upon the background of God's lordship over angels and spirits. Indeed, 'the messiah seems often to be envisaged as an embodied spirit'. It is the Jewish idea of a pre-existing messiah which provides the raw material used by Christians in their depiction of the pre-existent Christ, a relationship that renders modern analyses which widely separate the two 'overdrawn'. Horbury's intention is to cite broad swaths of Second Temple literature in order to demonstrate, over against scholarly depictions of a 'chaotically diverse Judaism', that the coherence of the messianic concept was widely held by sects and movements which disagreed on much else.

The book's final chapter ('Messianic Origins of the Cult of Christ') brings the network of previous observations to bear upon the genesis of the Christ cult. A recognisable cult, visible acclamation and hymnody addressed to Christ, goes back to apostolic times. Although the forms of this cult came under non-Jewish influence, it is 'best explained as a development of Jewish messianism'. By relegating Greco-Roman influence to a supportive role, Horbury strongly modifies recent work on messianism by R.E. Brown and E.P. Sanders. At the same time, he is careful to define the generative potency of uniquely Christian experience as secondary to and dependent upon the precedent already established by Jewish messianism. The earliest Jewish Christians were as horrified at idolatry and chary about ruler-cult as their non-Christian compeers, but 'did not regard their Christ-cult as inconsistent with these attitudes.' Praise of Christ and the assignation to him of numerous titles was doubtless shaped and even encouraged by ruler cult and by uniquely Christian experience (such as, acc. to L. Hurtado, visions of the risen Christ); nevertheless this behaviour is best understood as generated in the first instance by the coherent picture of an expected messiah which characterises the biblical literature as well as the belief and practice of Second Temple Judaism.

Horbury's case argues that silences in the literature vis-à-vis messianism are not as loud and less empty than is supposed by the scholarly consensus. This powerful book obliges any student of Jewish and Christian messianism who happens upon such silences to ask whether they veil broad patterns of messianic expectation rather than speak decisively of its absence.

    A Fine Complement to Hurtado
    By Michael D. Gantt
In Larry Hurtado's How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God?: Historical Questions about Earliest Devotion to Jesus, he takes issue with this book (Jewish Messianism and the Cult of Christ) by William Horbury. Yet, if you want to better understand Christian origins, you really need both books. This is because the authors' findings complement each other in very helpful ways.

Regarding Kipling's six honest-serving men, Hurtado answers when, who, and where while Horbury addresses what, how, and why. Hurtado makes clear (not just in his aforementioned book, but also in Lord Jesus Christ: Devotion to Jesus in Earliest Christianity and in One God, One Lord: Early Christian Devotion and Ancient Jewish Monotheism) that devotion to Jesus as a godlike figure began in the period 30-50 C.E. with Jews in the Roman province of Judea. Horbury shows that Jesus was so venerated because he was fulfilling Jewish messianic expectation, and that the forms of devotion were those historically associated with that expectation and with the veneration shown royal leaders in the Greco-Roman world. Where Hurtado and Horbury disagree is on the degree of veneration, or worship, offered. While Hurtado takes pains to delineate devotional practices, neither author defines "worship" clearly enough for readers to be able to sort out exact differences between them. This inexactitude on this one aspect, however, is secondary, given the broadly complementary nature of their respective findings.

Horbury first shows how messianism - the belief in a coming Jewish messiah - is found in the Old Testament. He then narrows his focus of time on the Second Temple Period and broadens his focus on literature to include the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Targums, Qumran texts, rabbinical literature, and more - showing that expectation of this messiah was commonplace throughout the period. He then shows that, while messianism manifested itself in varied forms with expectations that differed and at times seemed to conflict, it was a concept common enough among Jews that if one of them made reference to "the messiah coming" no fellow Jew would ask "What's a messiah? or "What makes you think such a person might be coming?" Lastly, Horbury shows how the matrix of messianic expectation during the Second Temple Period in the Greco-Roman world provided context in which Jesus was understood - and responded to - in the weeks, days, and years after the first Easter by his disciples.

Horbury writes for the scholarly guild so he can be tedious and difficult for a layman to read. Nonetheless, his erudition brings to light for everyone the pulsating expectation for God's messiah in the time leading up to Jesus of Nazareth. Trying to read the New Testament apart from an understanding of that expectation can lead to many false conclusions. Horbury is an excellent resource for achieving that understanding.

Another source for understanding the messianic expectation, and one that is easier to read and understand, is Walter Kaiser - especially his Messiah in the Old Testament, The. Nevertheless, Horbury deserves commendation for his densely-packed contribution to a better understanding of Christian origins. I am very happy that I have read him as well as Kaiser and others. As Jesus Himself said, "Salvation is from the Jews" (John 4:22). No Jew ever spoke more truly than that One.

    Jewish Messianism
    By David P. Efroymson
Horbury is obviously knowledgeable, both of the ancient materials and of contemporary scholarship. The book is a valuable contribution to the study of the issue. It seemed to me that he sees more nearness and coherence to the material than I do. He purposely opposes the current "standard" position of Neusner and Green's Judaisms and Their Messiahs and Charlesworth and Co.'s The Messiah. While I am not sure Horbury has the better of the argument, I am delighted he has stuck his oar in the water. We'll wait now for Joe Fitzmyer, and see what happens.

When "the dead" are on the other end of the line...
    By S. Alexander Hardison
Cal Cooper, the brilliant young parapsychologist from England, has gifted us with the fruits of his laborious studies into "phone call phenomena". Despite the somewhat provocative title, Mr. Cooper makes it clear that the true nature of the phenomena is not really understood and all the occurrences might have completely natural explanations. With that being said, he considers a great many possible explanations for the phenomena throughout the book, (varying from case to case) from possible (and sometimes probable) psychological explanations, to paranormal ones. Additionally, non-paranormal, but equally unorthodox explanations from some of the call Types are briefly considered.

Cooper separates all of the phone calls into 5 distinct "types". One of the types (Type 5) seems to involve cases where living people have the intention to call a particular person about a particular topic, but they never do. However, the person they intended to call later informs the person that they had received the call that they originally intended to make. In this sense, the title of the book can seem to be a bit of a misnomer. Cooper makes it clear that he does not feel any emotional attachment to any theory of the phenomena, but is totally willing to follow the evidence wherever it may lead. This is a truly scientific approach and needs to be adopted by a great many more academics.

Particularly enjoyable, to myself at least, was Chapter 8 (the theoretical chapter). It is there that Cooper proposes many of the more "unorthodox normal explanations" as possible solutions to some of the cases. I will leave it to the reader to read what these are. I agree wholeheartedly with Cal when he says that the phenomena, whatever their explanation may prove to be, warrant in depth study. These aspects of our experience could potentially reveal a great many of the "secrets" of what it means to be human; even if the belief in their paranormality is not warranted, their potential for shedding more light on human psychology is a near certainty.

I recommend reading "Telephone Calls from the Dead" and forming your own conclusions -or better still, without forming any conclusions and using it, with the book by Scott Rogo and Raymond Bayless called "Phone Calls from the Dead", as a firm base for the foundation of your own research.

    Very good book, very interesting
    By C. Good
Cooper's book _Telephone Calls from the Dead_ is an attempt to collect and analyze accounts of people who feel they may have received telephone calls from people who are dead. The book is a continuation of research published in 1979 by Rogo and Bayless, _Phone Calls from the Dead_.

_Telephone Calls from the Dead_ is quite an interesting book, both in the accounts that have been collected, and also in the method he uses to analyze them. Cooper explains that "parapsychology" is not just the study of strange events, but the study of why those strange events happened to a particular person at a particular time.

So, in many cases, Cooper is quite open to the possibility that some accounts are hallucinations or dreams, particularly if the person who received the call was grieving for someone they had lost. Cooper also does a very thorough job of looking at other psychological effects -- such as bereavement -- when analyzing different accounts.

There is a lot of historical research in the book, and Cooper recounts how anomalous messages have been received over electric communication for quite some time, including an account in 1915 of a wireless telegraph producing messages in Morse code when no messages were being sent and even then the receiving antenna was disconnected. When it comes to telephones, there have been accounts of unusual messages for almost as long as telephones have existed.

Cooper breaks the calls into different categories and follows up with the people who reported the experience whenever possible. He also has a chapter where he talks about cases that don't really fit into any of the categories, and another chapter for telephone-related messages that are allegedly from the dead, such as voicemail and text messages.

As he goes through his research, Cooper discusses some of the overall views of parapsychology, both within parapsychology itself and from other branches of science. Even if you are not particularly interested in whether the dead can contact the living via telephone, I would recommend the book just the for the discussions of parapsychology, whether it is just a study of phenomena or a study of why phenomena are alleged to have happened to a particular person at a particular place and time, and whether criticism from other branches of science actually focus on scientific rigor of the research or focus more on whether there is a scientifically-accepted explanation for the phenomena at this time.

A very good book, very interesting to read.

You did a great job carrying forward Rogo and Bayless work!
    By Michael H. Edwards
Callum I authored the popular selling book Speaking to the Dead with Radios also available here at Amazon. Finally I was able to read your book. I have been home recovering from Cancer surgery. I want you to know that I was very impressed with your follow on from Rogo and Bayless Phone Calls from the Dead. You did a great job carrying it forward. As you know I use radio sweep technology to record audio messages from the dead, a process the scientific community doesn't agree is valid. For quite some time now I have been fascinated with the idea of receiving a phone call from the dead. Early this year, I assembled two 1970 era table top telephones connecting them as in intercom system with the power source provided from a Lap Top Computer power brick. I have tried repeatedly to summon Konstantin Raudive to ring my phone setup, so I could record any messages that came through. I have a suction cup microphone hooked up to the receiver of one of the phones. Note that these phones are stand-alone and are not hooked up to the telephone system. Sadly to date I have received no rings or call. If I do get a call, and if I am able to establish a repeatable process, I will give you all my work so you can try it yourself in a controlled environment. Well done my friend, and I wish you the best!

The Lost Lawyer : Failing Ideals of the Legal Profession, by Anthony Kronman

Anthony Kronman describes a spiritual crisis affecting the American legal profession, and attributes it to the collapse of what he calls the ideal of the lawyer-statesman: a set of values that prizes good judgment above technical competence and encourages a public-spirited devotion to the law.

For nearly two centuries, Kronman argues, the aspirations of American lawyers were shaped by their allegiance to a distinctive ideal of professional excellence. In the last generation, however, this ideal has failed, undermining the identity of lawyers as a group and making it unclear to those in the profession what it means for them personally to have chosen a life in the law.

A variety of factors have contributed to the declining prestige of prudence and public-spiritedness within the legal profession. Partly, Kronman asserts, it is the result of the triumph, in legal thought, of a counterideal that denigrates the importance of wisdom and character as professional virtues. Partly, it is due to an array of institutional forces, including the explosive growth of the country's leading law firms and the bureaucratization of our courts. The Lost Lawyer examines each of these developments and illuminates their common tendency to compromise the values from which the ideal of the lawyer-statesman draws strength. It is the most important critique of the American legal profession in some time, and an an enduring restatement of its ideals.

    From Library Journal
America's lawyers are viewed with ambivalence. The best, perhaps embodied by Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird , combine judgment and principle with something of the scholar's love of the pursuit of truth. Yet Dan Quayle questions lawyers' basic honesty and trustworthiness at the annual American Bar Association convention. Kronman (law, Yale Univ.) worries about the decline of the "lawyer-statesman," that lawyer who possesses more than just technical proficiency in legal persuasion. Kronman sees Abraham Lincoln and, more recently, the late Chief Justice Earl Warren as just such "lawyer-statesmen." Both possessed those traits of prudence, wisdom, and judgment that counted far more than legal expertise. Their absence underlies the crisis facing the American legal profession. This is an interesting book, but it won't change many of the well-entrenched opinions about lawyers. For academic and larger public library legal collections.

    Review
An eloquent and provocative book. When you listen to...[Kronman's] diagnoses of just what has gone wrong with the job of lawyering today, you begin to see that the spreading disaffection of lawyers for their work should not be underestimated. (Michael Orey American Lawyer)

[This book] is an eloquent and impassioned work of scholarship. It makes an important contribution to the growing body of literature devoted to the study of the legal profession. (Anthony V. Alfieri Michigan Law Review)

Kronman deploys philosophical acumen and wide learning to revive the ideal of the lawyer--whether counselor, advocate, scholar, teacher, or judge--as practitioner of a kind of wisdom that he argues has long been out of fashion. This is an important book. (Charles Fried, Harvard Law School)

Many thoughtful observers of the legal profession have come to wonder whether the profession's traditional aspirations can possibly flourish in the current conditions of practice. Kronman is one of several critics to conclude, regretfully, that those aspirations are doomed...If lawyers could spare any time to read, The Lost Lawyer should really make them sit up and take notice of what has happened to them. (Robert W. Gordon, Stanford Law School)

    Painfully Beautiful
    By Robert C. Berring
:This book is beautiful. It aches for a time when the practice of law included public service. When did the function of law schools become feeding graduates to the bottom line practice of large law firms? Either everyone contemplating law school should read this book, or they should be banned from access to it. Remember, Kronman was dean of the yale law school.

    Out of Touch Academic Elitism
    By J. Taylor
Kronman seems to have missed the boat on the plain language movement in law. Justice Scalia would be very disappointed in him.

The Lost Lawyer is out of touch academic elitism at it's best. It outlines the ideal of the Lawyer-Statesman and then spends the rest of the book explaining attacks and erosion on the Lawyer-Statesman ideal. It's academically lazy, when you purport a fiction as reality, it's easy to find reality incompatible with it.

My question to Kronman is, if we've deviated from the lawyer-statesman ideal and lost our way, why did it take 200 years to abolish slavery and what was Thomas Jefferson thinking with Sally Hemmings? It wasn't very statesmanlike. What was Abe Lincoln doing when he negotiated slavery. In his letter to Conkling, Lincoln revealed that he gave 100 days notice of the emancipation proclamation, and that he wouldn't issue it if the rebelling states returned their allegiance. Does the lawyer-statesman negotiate the human and civil rights of men for political gain? I doubt this.

The Lawyer-Statesman is a fine ideal to strive for, but don't try to tell me that we once had it and lost it. If you want to move towards it, fine, I can accept that, but arguing that we've come from it is lost. John Adams defending the British soldiers in Boston is no different than Stephen Vladeck defending suspected terrorists at Guantanimo Bay. Nothing has been lost, your just selectively looking for the purposes of your argument.

    A Misfire Worth Reading
    By A Customer
Charlotte Rampling, beautiful and tear-stained, has a minor breakdown midway through The Verdict--she's fallen for Paul Newman, the lawyer she's been assigned to seduce and spy on by her boss at the big, evil law firm. James Mason, the suave evil boss, consoles her with a drink and an apothegm: "You don't get paid to do your best," Mason says. "You get paid to win." That scene (expertly written by David Mamet) explains the legal profession in America and provides a summary of Kronman's argument. Kronman, the current Dean of Yale Law, bemoans the extinction of lawyers of sound judgment, prudence, and a concern for a range of interests--the client's, the law's, society's, etc. Lawyers who were actively involved with their community and their country, who were looked to as figures of wisdom, not avarice. But Kronman is more diagnostic than prescriptive. He's right--that breed of lawyer has all but vanished. Still, he provides little in the way of practical suggestions for correcting the problem. And his focus is on the profession and the law schools. His focus should be on the free market. Elite American law schools are catering to the needs of the large firms, which are catering to the needs of their corporate clients. To graduate marketable lawyers, the schools have to create skilled technicians. The hiring partner at a Wall Street Firm wants to know that an applicant has the stamina necessary to put in the hours, and the intelligence and tools needed to grind out competent work. No one is interested in his or her views about what might be a more prudent approach to the client's problem; his or her judgment is not only not demanded, it's unwelcome. Kronman's focus is too narrow. The legal profession has become the law business. Because that's what's demanded by clients, who pay the tab. So I think he should have examined the underpinnings of the free market system, which I favor but which is responsible for the shift in legal education and law practice. Also, how does one teach prudence? How does a vocational school--or perhaps any school--instil sound judgment? Furthermore, prudence and judgment are qualities that, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. Finally, Kronman's assertion that much of the problem arose when the large Protestant law firms started hiring Jews, African-Americans, women, and associates from the working classes and from second and third-tier schools sounds not only wrong, but bizarrely priggish and elitist in all the wrong ways. Kronman, as far as I can tell, has never practiced law for any length of time, nor has he toiled as a judge. He's spent his career locked in the Ivory Tower of academia, and his book is the high-toned result.
