One of the best books ever!

This book has got to be one of the best photographic costume history books ever! Snatch this one while you can!
The section on Charles James is alone worth it, since it is next to impossible to find great photos of his work.
I wish more Costume history books were like this with actual full color photos. And the photos are big, not tiny stamp-sized images that make your head hurt.
If you're like me, you hate to invest money to get a book filled with crappy line drawings.
This is what I want in a fashion book. The actual photos are in full color, with front and back shots.

FABulous--Get it before it's out of print

If you never had a chance to visit the Brooklyn Museum during one of their fashion exhibits (I made the epic journey there twice, only to find the FASHION exhibits closed for one reason or another) or you missed out on their book, "Worth, Pingat and Doucet", this book's for you.

The author doesn't just recite the garment details, she talks about the designers shown here, long forgotten as well as the better known. Valentina is here, for instance. Examples from Charles James that I had not seen before. Many others! Not a few of these garments came from well known socialites. Lavish full length studies in glorious color. For me, it was worth both the expense and the wait to get this. Wonderful examples shown, something for everyone! Details you can SEE. By the way, some of the garments seen here have had pattern graphs taken from them in Blanche Payne's "History of Costume", the older edition.

Sadly, the Brooklyn Museum simply doesn't have the resources to keep these clothes or mount any exhibits. This explains why there was nothing to see when I went in the past. Rather like Snowshill Manor's excellent collection (some of which were graphed by J. Arnold); the clothing has now moved elsewhere and seen seldom. Barnard Castle in Britain was another museum that auctioned their costume collection off completely.

Having said that, the Brooklyn Museum is a fine one with many other treasures to see, should you make the journey. Buy the book now, before it's out of print and you have to mortgage your house to buy a copy.

Vintage couture at it's very best

If you are seeking a vintage couture resource that is complete, informative, with great photos, this would be the one for you. It is similar in feeling to the Kyoto Costume Institute book with fantastic photos and descriptions of the best of the best. I managed to see both the Brooklyn Musuem Exhibit AND the Metropolitan Museum exhibit in one weekend. These were some of the most amazing garments that one will be able to see. Most will agree that the Brooklyn Museum exhibit was laid out better and easier to see than the Met's, but they did make a nice sister exhibit. Most of the garments here are from the Brooklyn Museum with a few add ins from the collection and a few deletions from the original exhibit. But for the most part, it is pretty complete. This is a great tool for the vintage couture collector and quite an education on most of the leading designers and a few that have long become forgotten, especially the American Designers. That is the most interesting part. The Women American designers were quite informative including Eta Hentz, Bonnie Cashin, and of course, Clare McCardell. The Worth and the Charles James collections are some of the finest and perfect examples of their couture that is in existence today. That alone makes it worth purchasing this resource.
The Book is not too big and not too small. The price is right and the glossy photos and finish of the book is amazing. I recommend this book highly!

The writing of this book was started years ago when UHCI and OHCI were just surfacing.  Then in recent years when xHCI surfaced, I once again took interest in USB and spent the time needed to finish this book.

I very much enjoyed this project and continue to work with and show interest in the USB concept and hardware, as in recently releasing the 2nd edition in late 2014 with updates, corrections, and addition information.

About the Author
Benjamin David Lunt has been programming computers since 1984 and has always enjoyed the hardware side of the spectrum.  He has programmed many different types of programs, mostly for DOS and other minimal operating systems, as well as a few programs for the Windows family.

About 13 years ago, he started to read up on the Universal Host Controller Interface (UHCI) and got hooked on the USB concept.  He has been programming for USB ever since.  One of the more known projects has been the USB support for the Bochs Emulator.

Programming is not Ben's only line of work.  He has been in the building trade since 1991, and enjoys remodeling homes.

He also enjoys hunting, fishing, and is an active member of his local Boy Scout troop.

Excellent book about interacting with USB hardware

This book was exactly what I was looking for. Excellent detail about all topics covered, and makes no assumptions about the environment in which your software runs when interacting with the hardware.

Recommended for the Basics from scratch

I bought and read the kindle edition of this book. It initially explains the PCI interface for usb host and continues with the 4 distinct usb controllers. It actually explains every aspect that you should know to write the usb driver from scratch without any os dependencies. Actually, If you write usb device driver of Windows or Linux etc. You should refer to the specific information regarding usb driver heirarchy which your target OS provides. But this book tells the basics of the USB driver from scratch. Must read for the reader who eagar to learn basics of USB device driver fundamentals.

A nice USB reference

Ben Lunt shares his enthusiasm for USB in this book, his website, and his blog. If you want to mess around with building USB hardware or writing software that drives USB devices, this book is a good starting place as well as ongoing reference. I feel bad for the author that one of the reviews above gives him one star because it's not for beginners. You'd think that would be obvious given the title. Even so, it does provide some very nice history about USB, along with details of versions 1, 2 and 3.0 of the USB standard. My main complaint is the Windows-centricity of the example code, but if you can't get over that and you run Linux or MacOS, this book is probably not for you anyway. Another bit of feedback is that the Kindle version's formatting, especially in the tables and code examples, is a bit awkward at best, and in a couple places looses information (I recommend shrinking the font quite small). Rounding up from 4.5 stars.

Max Morden has reached a crossroads in his life, and is trying hard to deal with several disturbing things. A recent loss is still taking its toll on him, and a trauma in his past is similarly proving hard to deal with. He decides that he will return to a town on the coast at which he spent a memorable holiday when a boy. His memory of that time devolves on the charismatic Grace family, particularly the seductive twins Myles and Chloe. In a very short time, Max found himself drawn into a strange relationship with them, and pursuant events left their mark on him for the rest of his life. But will he be able to exorcise those memories of the past?

The fashion in which John Banville draws the reader into this hypnotic and disturbing world is non pareil, and the very complex relationships between his brilliantly delineated cast of characters are orchestrated with a master’s skill. As in such books as Shroud and The Book of Evidence, the author eschews the obvious at all times, and the narrative is delivered with subtlety and understatement. Banville's magnificent new novel, which won this year's Man Booker Prize and is being rushed into print by Knopf, presents a man mourning his wife's recent death—and his blighted life. "The past beats inside me like a second heart," observes Max Morden early on, and his return to the seaside resort where he lost his innocence gradually yields the objects of his nostalgia. Max's thoughts glide swiftly between the events of his wife's final illness and the formative summer, 50 years past, when the Grace family—father, mother and twins Chloe and Myles—lived in a villa in the seaside town where Max and his quarreling parents rented a dismal "chalet." Banville seamlessly juxtaposes Max's youth and age, and each scene is rendered with the intense visual acuity of a photograph ("the mud shone blue as a new bruise"). As in all Banville novels, things are not what they seem. Max's cruelly capricious complicity in the sad history that unfolds, and the facts kept hidden from the reader until the shocking denouement, brilliantly dramatize the unpredictability of life and the incomprehensibility of death. Banville's novel, which won this year's Man Booker Prize, is narrated by an art historian, whose grief at the death of his wife has stalled his work on a "Big Book on Bonnard." In retreat at an Irish seaside town where he vacationed as a child, he sifts through memories of his entanglement with an upper-class family who stayed nearby. The plot is minimal; instead, the novel's drama takes place in Banville's remarkable imagery—a thunderstorm is "the sky stamping up and down in a fury, breaking its bones," and distant breakers are "like a hem being turned endlessly by a sleepy seamstress." Banville's technique generates a kind of supercharged sparseness, forcefully conveying the narrator's anguish, as he comes to an understanding that "we are defined and have our being through others" and must realign ourselves when those closest to us disappear.

Typical Banville, so buyer beware

Grieving for his dead wife, Anna, the recently widowed - widowered? - art critic Max Mordern returns to the seaside village where he passed the summers of his childhood. He doesn't move into the old family chalet, but rather into a room of the large holiday house once occupied by the wealthy family of his childhood friend, Chloe Grace. There he's supposed to be writing about the artist Bonnard, but instead - or perhaps as well - pens a meditation on the past, exploring the nature of memory and loss... Sounds depressing, but this novel actually made me laugh out loud several times. Banville virgins coming to this direct from the Man Booker winners list might find the absence of a compelling plot off-putting, not to mention the knowingly unreliable narration and the lurking sense that the reader is being elaborately toyed with - especially in the final pages where melodramatic revelations are self-consciously, almost wryly, deployed. It isn't you. It's Banville. As David Mehegan reported recently in the Sydney Sun Herald, most of Banville's novels are like this: relatively thin in terms of plot, scene and dialogue, and virtually all of them are told in the first person by a more or less dislikeable male narrator in an overwrought, lyrical style. His tormented men see everything, and what they see and think unrolls in dazzling verbal pyrotechnics, thick with arcane words and startling metaphors (you'd best keep a dictionary handy). Mehegan quotes other critics as saying that Banville does stretch the reader at times, looking for exactitude and precision, always searching for the mot juste. At its most intense, there is a kind of preciousness in his work. When it's most liberating it reveals the resources of the language and how much is going on in things that look like still life: the light coming in the window, someone sitting in a chair. For some readers, it's not the style that's a problem but the want of traditional novelistic elements. Banville's response to this complaint: "I'm not really interested in fiction. I don't regard the novel as a very interesting art form." Asked if that means that his books aren't novels or aren't interesting, he says, "If I had the choice of what kind of artist I would be, it would be a composer or a painter, but I have no skill whatsoever." That's perhaps the best way to think of "The Sea" and most other Banville novels: as something akin to a painting or a piece of music. The thrill isn't in the tale, but in the exquisitely rendered details. It takes some getting used to, but once you know what to expect - once you work out that the artful pomposity is a deliberate function of the character-narrator, and not a failing of the author - then Banville's work is amazing. Lovers of language will adore it. Lovers of plot will be dozing. Lovers of Dan Brown will be furious - which is a nice change, considering they're usually so infuriating.

A writer's writer.

This is a book that grows on you after you have put it down. Like many other winners of the Man Booker Prize (this being the most recent), John Banville's novel is long on atmosphere and style, but short on story; think of a male Anita Brookner, or a Proust writing at scarcely more than novella length. Following the death of his wife, writer and art historian Max Morden returns to the Irish seaside town of Ballyless, where he used to spend summer holidays as a child. Reminiscences of his friendship with another family, the Graces, shot through with tinges of prepubescent eroticism, intertwine with reflections on grief, aging, and personal identity.

Banville's style is extraordinary, his insights ring true, and his feeling for place and period is remarkable. I also found this book spoke to me on a number of coincidental personal levels, having grown up in just such a seaside town in Ireland, pursued a brief career in art history, and now being of a similar age to the leading character. But I can imagine that even people with less similar backgrounds, especially those of an older generation, might feel the same hypnotic magic, such is Banville's power to draw the reader into his world.

And yet I have two cavils that originally made me question the fifth star (which I ultimately awarded). One is that the long-ago story just seems too slim to support all this rumination; or rather, the connection between those events and the narrator's later life is not entirely clear -- less so than in Jane Gardam's OLD FILTH, for instance, another recent novel which excavates the past as a key to the present. However, the last twenty pages of the book deliver a couple of interesting plot twists which suddenly shine a new light on the faded memories, akin to cleaning off the varnish from an old picture and seeing it for the first time as it always was.

Then there is that style, praised by everybody, and rightly so. There is at least one unusual word on every page, or words converted surprisingly from one part of speech to another, in Joycean fashion. This creates a surprised tingle in the reader, and often enough triggers the delighted recognition that the writer has got the description exactly right. But when this happens too many times, it begins to seem an affectation, overly self-conscious. Two passages in particular gave me pause: "sitting up in my ornate bed as on a catafalque, if that is the word I want" and "I pictured her in bombazine, whatever that is." Now an author who can use words like revenant, mephitic, flocculent, pharaonic, and prelapsarian without a quiver can certainly handle catafalque and bombazine. But of course it is not the author that is hesitating here, but the CHARACTER, the writer Max Morden himself . . . .

I can see now that Max refers self-deprecatingly to his own abilities as a writer throughout the book: mediocre, with occasional flashes of brilliance. And he is clearly conscious not only of the story he is telling, but of how he is telling it. Just before the final developments, he writes: "After all, why should I be less susceptible than the next melodramatist to the tale's demand for a neat closing twist?" Much of his life seems to have been centered on a desire to define himself, whether through others or through his writing, and he recognizes that he turned to the Graces at least partly for such definition. Children often construct stories around themselves, and act out scenarios of their own imagining; but when their imagined dramas intersect and conflict with real-life events, the result can be devastating.

I am finding myself thinking more and more highly of this book as I write about it; it acts like a time-release capsule. Good writing can do that. But I still can't help feeling that it would have been better if, over the first fifty pages or so, I hadn't found myself thinking "How exquisitely Banville writes!" but instead "Who is this interesting character? Why does he use language in such a manner? I would like to know more . . . ."

Poetry in prose

When this book won the Man Booker prize in England late last year, there were dissenting opinions among the panel of judges. In fact, after the announcement that 'The Sea' had won, one of the disagreeing judges was quoted in the press that the choice by the majority of the panel had been "perverse."

John Banville, in an oblique response to that slur, stated during his acceptance speech that he congratulated the committee for having the courage to select a novel with good writing this year (I paraphrase). This may have been a comment also on the other nominees last year, among them 'Saturday' and 'Never Let Me Go' (I happen to agree with that assessment).

There may be a bit of truth to both sides of that prize skirmish. This novel is a narrative with a weak story line. It is more a stream of consciousness reminiscence and pondering of the past than a novel with a plot. As such, it is a bit static, since nothing much happens outside of the first person singular main character's thought process. However, the observations that he makes about his life are so touching and so profound that one becomes as involved in his life as with an engaging memoirist. The sentences are constructed as carefully as lines of poetry, the words conveying beauty as well as emotional insights.

Approach this book as you would a gourmet meal--ingest it slowly and savor every sentence. And if you go back for seconds and read it again, you'll pick up scents and textures you missed the first time.
