A mystery as current as today’s news, Murder or Not begins in Cotton Patch, a small farming community in deep South Texas, when Dr. Maria Garcia’s father, Judge Roberto Garcia and four Mexican workers are shot by a farmer, Leonard Wilkins. Roberto is hospitalized in critical condition with shotgun wounds and a heart attack.
A racist reporter, “Wild Bill” Silverman, whose solution to the “Mexican problem”, as he calls it, is to kick them all out and build a higher fence, writes a front page story applauding Wilkins’s patriotism.
When Roberto’s drug addled teenage son, Victor, vows to kill Wilkins, Roberto asks Maria to protect his son and she can’t refuse. Following Victor, she saves Wilkins’s life when Victor attacks him, but has to kidnap Wilkins to keep him alive and Victor away from the Sheriff.
What to do next? By trial and error, Maria concocts a plan relying on drug assisted hypnosis, electroshock, and a staged attempted murder of Silverman by Wilkins.
Then she spots Dojo Lewis. When they were both fourteen, he had been her very best friend although he was horribly deformed and known as monster by most people. She hadn’t seen him since he was sent to jail and military school after attacking a bullying male nurse. He seems to be stalking her. Why?
Her plan falls apart, and she finds Silverman shot and near death. She doesn’t know who shot him but her medical training tells her to save his life. Is it a life she wants to save? Feeling Silverman’s pulse weakening and hearing the Sheriff and his deputies getting closer, she has seconds to decide.

Good first effort

For a debut book by an author, this is a good start. The book is written grammatically correct although it could benefit by use of a content-based editor. The first part of the novel is somewhat slow but speeds up to a lightning pace at the end, almost too much so. Some things are left unexplained at the end. The characters are fairly well-developed by their actions. The use of some of the technical medical terms sometimes caused me to pause in reading. This is not a genre I normally read and was somewhat put off by the paranormal aspects of the novel, but that is just me and not a criticism of the novel.

Filed with unexpected twists and turns. Swift moving plot. Different characters from most murder mysteries that make getting to know the characters interesting. This book reads like an action movie, full of fantastical events that only make the book more fun!

Highly imaginative story, keeps the reader guessing & gasping. Formatting & editing problems are distracting, but the interest level maintains. Somewhat of a race to the climax & complicated resolution.
