A Nice Companion for OO Newbies

If you are in the process of moving your first steps in Object Oriented Programming, and find it too abstract, or you get it "in theory" but have difficulties in grasping what it's all about in practice..or are simply just confused this video series might be helpful.. Simon Allardice is as always a super tech speaker.. I think OO in my sleep but I still enjoyed watching this just out of the curiosity of seeing how he approached the subject and for the sheer pleasure of hearing him speak about tech topics. I know, I am might not be totally "normal" :)
Anyhow.. if you want a short and sweet introduction to the pillars of OO, abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism, some basic element of UML, use cases , the OO design process and its main principles, this video series might help. But make no mistake, to fully comprehend and appreciate this material you will need to learn from trial and error, success and mistakes..and the more mistakes you make, the better.. :) In a word, experience.

About the Author
Herbert Goldenberg was Professor Emeritus of Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles, where he developed and taught classes in family therapy. Together with Irene Goldenberg he was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. He also held membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. He was also elected fellow in that APA division. The Goldenbergs co-authored another book published by Brooks/Cole, COUNSELING TODAY'S FAMILIES, Fourth Edition.

Irene Goldenberg is Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She served as Associate Chairperson of that department and as Director of Psychological Services for many years, and continues to teach marriage and family therapy courses to psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers there. She currently supervises doctoral students and directs the family therapy program at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Together with Herbert Goldenberg, Dr. Goldenberg was awarded the 2007 American Family Therapy Academy lifetime achievement award for family therapy. She also holds membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Family Therapy Academy, and the Family Therapy division of the American Psychological Association. Ok intro to family counseling

In all honesty, this book is boring and the writing style is dry. Even though this addition is "revised", it is sorely in need of a complete overhaul. I believe the only revisions must have been statistical, as the material itself seemed really outdated.

It did, however, have a pretty decent section explaining the different theoretical models of family therapy. If it weren't for this in addition to its inclusion of diversity (albeit old and somewhat stereotypical) it would have received two stars from me!

This is an excellent entry level book for those just beginning to look at family counseling. It gives examples from real life counseling situations which is what I love. The book covers single parent families, alternative family styles and other topics that speak to the families of today. The book is very much written with the child in mind which is exactly the focus I need.

I had to have this book for school. The information is not current as it was published in 2002. I would strongly discourage people from using it as a source or using for a couneling program. I found this book offensive at some points.

Very Disappointing

I was very disappointed by the quality of this book. Given some critical review and editing by both the authors and editors, the next edition of this book could be a very useful primer on homeland security. This current edition, however, was poorly edited, minimal effort (if any) went into source verification, and the authors made judgments/drew conclusions that that were poorly supported at best. Although I am tempted to provide examples of the mistakes, poor documentation, unverified sourcing, and out of date information, I do not wish to publicly embarrass Gaines, Kappeler, or the editors of the book. I do feel compelled to warn students, if required to purchase this book, to read it with a very critical eye. I would also encourage any teachers/professors/instructors to do the same before requiring it for your classes.

Required reading

The course I took required this textbook. The textbook was very informative. HOWEVER, I've read tens of textbooks relating to criminal justice and this one was probably the driest I've ever had to read. Retaining the information was difficult because it honest to God is the most boring book I've ever had to lay eyes on.

Very dated reference but does provide very detailed insight on terrorism as it relates to evolution of homeland security. Copyright is 2012 although not much information on homeland security programs after 2010. Could have done without subjective/subliminal references to what is a blatant [liberal] viewpoint from the authors. Expect more objectivity and a "just the facts" approach from college level reference material. Wait, ...what?

This series is still very plot-heavy, but still very enjoyable.

The problem with Rulca is dealt with in this volume, and the group moves on to entering a new town to move along the main plot. Limris is still up to something, and I don’t think I like him. I’m honestly not hugely invested in the larger plot, even if I do find some of it exciting.

Meanwhile, Vald is having a hard time accepting his other self, even if he has started using it when he needs to. Then he and Halvir have a fight, and make up with some sex. It’s a little adorable, and then very hot, and then sweet again. I just like them, unabashedly. I am reading this solely for them, and I am not ashamed.

Which is to say that I will be getting the next volume, hopefully soon, just for them, and I am excited for it.

BEST STORY EVER!

Best series of all time, both the art, the romance, and the fantastical, mysterious plot. You cannot love yaoi, and not read this one. Plus the published versions of this story make so much more sense than the fan-made translations. For one thing, everything is in order, and obviously translated properly. I love this story so much more now that I understand what's going on, and I can't wait for the next volume!

Oh, Wow, I loved how this one ended. Yamane has done an outstanding job in writing this yaoi manga - in my opinion. Just can't say enough good stuff about the series, only that the couples relationship is intriguing and you want more. Now I have to wait for the next Vol. and I know it has to be as great as the previous volumes.

About the Author
Paul Dini has been making cartoons at Warner Bros. since 1989. Starting with Steven Spielberg Presents Tiny Toons Adventures, he went on to write (and eventually coproduce) Batman: The Animated Series. He won four Emmys, three comics industry Eisner awards, and has, within the space of sixteen years, written more cartoons than most sane people will see in a lifetime. He lives in Los Angeles.

Chip Kidd was born in Reading, PA in 1964. He lives in New York City and Stonington, CT.

If you just can't get enough of Batman The Animated Series, this is definitely for you!

First of all, thank you RentU for your excellent services. I bought this used, condition: Used-Good. I expected something fairly decent, but what I got was unexpectedly great! And extremely fast international delivery despite using Amazon standard global shipping. If not for a couple of "bruises" on the spine and a few dented corners of the hardcover, the inside of the book is basically like new! The price I paid was a steal!

Now, for the product itself: In short, I find it excellent! It's got loads of art from the show, loads of crude sketches from Bruce Timm & other artists that worked on the show, some behind the scenes stuff... I was overwhelmed when I first opened it! And all pages are printed in extremely high quality. The book is pretty large, so you can observe the art in great detail.

I must confess that I am a fan of the Batman animated series. Have been since I was a kid. I couldn't believe it when I discovered this book. For a fan of the original animated series, of Bruce Timm and the universe he created (the Timmverse some call it), this is a must-have item that should not miss from one's library. It almost makes you feel that you've been there, between these great artists, when it was all happening.

If you can get it new at a decent price or used but in very good condition (I was extremely lucky to buy an excellent used copy very cheaply, thanks again RentU) I cannot recommend it more to you.

Must-Have for the B:TAS Fan!

"Batman: The Animated Series" was one of the most revolutionary and influential cartoons ever created. This book, written by B:TAS writer/producer Paul Dini, is an essential look into the creation and phenomenon of the series. While a little slim on actual reading, what is there gives you that most coveted "behind-the-scenes" info on what it took to make "Batman". (For another perspective on the show's creation, check out the "Modern Masters: Bruce Timm" interview book.)

The real meat of the book lies in its visuals: photos, line art, animation cels, background keys, licensed toys, etc. The layout of these materials seems a bit haphazard (for being done by the "design-god" Chip Kidd), with captions sometimes hard to correlate with their images and numerous fold-out pages (which I really don't care for). However, the sheer number and quality of images is amazing, and some of the full-page renderings of production key art is breath-taking. I question some of the image choices in the character-design section, particularly the villians. But, again, there's a lot of ground to cover here and the quality and quantity of pictures is overwhelming.

The book was published before Batman Beyond and Justice League, so the ending comments might seem a little off. Still as a retrospective on the "B:TAS", you can't ask for much more. This would have been a 5 star review, if only there'd been a little more reading and a bit less visual confusion.

Bottom line: Love "Batman: The Animated Series"? Buy this book.

A great book for a great animated series

Who best to write a book about this justifiably award-winning animated series than one of the series writer/producers--Paul Dini (who wrote one of my favorite episodes--"Heart of Ice")? And with graphic designer Chip Kidd involved, you have a book that looks great on the coffee table. The best word I can use to describe this book is "thorough." It contains superlative art in full color, storyboards, character designs, in-house memos, licensed products, an episode guide from the animated series, plus great information on why the series was created, why the censors said no to certain aspects, as well as facts about the movies based on the series (SUBZERO, MASK OF THE PHANTASM). My only complaint is that the book isn't longer. But that's not the authors' fault. They put together such a great book, you'll want as much insight into the creation of this series as you can get (like a good DVD provides). And these guys deliver! This is a great "backstage" look for fans of the series.
