About the Author
B. Rama Rao is a principal engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in applied physics from Harvard University. W. Kunysz works for Nov Atel, Inc. An inventor of six patents, he holds a Master of Nautical Sciences degree from Gdynia Maritime University in Poland. R. Fante held various engineering positions at Avco Corporation, the U.S. Air Force, Textron Corporation, and most recently at the MITRE Corporation. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton University. K. McDonald is the lead signal processing engineer at the MITRE Corporation. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Lehigh University.

The Best! Increase Your Enjoyment of Wines

Windows on the World Complete Wine Course: 25th Anniversary Edition is the number one book to learn about wine. It's a complete, readable guide to wine regions, grape varietals, wine pairing, and much much more. You'll learn about all the major wine regions, their typical grape varietals, and distinguishing characteristics.

Throughout the book specific, easily available, and affordable wines are profiled by winery. Special sections take this further: wine tasting "courses" of flights of different wines to compare; 101 favorite wines; and wines to begin a wine cellar.

Now, in it's 25 Anniversary edition it's been enlarged further with new sections on Austria, Hungary, and Greece. The wine lists have been updated and enlarged, and sections Chile, Argentina, and New Zealand have been expanded given their influence in the world of wine today.

I've completed two levels of the excellent Wine and Spirit Education Trust's wine programs. I'm amazed that Kevin Zraly's Windows on the World is just as thorough and is basically the intermediate level - in a book. I refer back to it often, and give it as gifts to friends who want to increase their appreciation of wine.

Enjoying the book so far, but none of the video codes work

Still reading the book but one thing I am finding VERY frustrating is none of the QR codes (or the Bitly addresses below them) are functional. They all go to error pages. I'm hoping the publisher sees this review and gets them fixed so readers can watch the videos. I will check them again and update my review when I'm done reading the book.

Excellent Introduction to Wine

This is a great introduction for anyone new to wine, as I was. This is not intended to be the most complete reference for all wine, but is instead a colorful, focused, entertaining overview of wine today. Each chapter focuses on a different region or type of wine, providing background information on each wine area, the author's favorite wineries/producers from the area, a sample tasting (he picks several wines for you to try and also suggests alternatives if you can't find those particular bottles) and a quiz at the end to help you retain some of that information. A great book for any wine lover!

Makes modern sex guides obsolete

How many of you recall how, back in the 1970s, the Supreme Court decided that our founding fathers really meant freedom of the press and of speech to include the most pornographic materials on news stands for children to see and purchase. Remember all those sex manuals that suddenly proliferated: The Sensuous This and That, Where to Pick Up Men/Women and What To Do With Them Later? Well, back around the first century CE a chap named Ovid had anticipated them all with his "Art of Love." And that was literally in the Year 1.
Augustus, head of one of the most corrupt empires ever, went on a morality kick, had the book banned, and sent Ovid into exile. In fact, the United States also tried to keep the book out of this country up to 1960. And now in 2004 you can hear it read with perfect enunciation and seriousness by Martin Jarvis on two Audio Partners tapes (21050).
The first part is addressed to the men, the second (to keep things fair, Ovid explains) to the women. Now many people confuse his purpose just as they do that of Machiavelli in "The Prince." Neither man is advocating what he writes as a way of life. He is merely describing how humans have always acted and saying that if you wish to do these things, you might as well do them right. (I know some will disagree with me when it comes to Ovid, but to each his own opinion.)
Using metaphors drawn from chariot racing, navigating, and mythical tales, Ovid describes in great details where to meet the opposite sex, how to attract them, how to keep them interested when out of bed, and how to act when in bed. Yes, being a man, he tends to be very patronizing when discussing female reactions in the men's section; but he is quite sympathetic to women when addressing them in the second section.
Definitely not to be used for junior high school book reports, this reading will not only amuse you and surprise you (my gosh, it's so modern!) but perhaps also give you a deeper insight from a man who did it all about 2000 years ago.

Seems Great

Let me admit right up front that I am not a fan of 95% of the music chronicled in this book. But several of my friends are, so I thought I'd dip into it to see if it would make a nice gift. With that in mind, I read the one chapter that covers music I really love, the chapter about the rapid rise and fall of the 2-Tone ska movement. Those twenty pages were enough to convince me that Reynolds is best kind of music writer, able to write evocatively about the music itself while providing the social, economic, and political context for its creation. He hits the nail firmly on the head in his analysis of The Specials' songs as "cheerless" -- tying them to social-realist cinema and the bleak post-WWII concrete jungle of their native Coventry. Reynolds also does a nice job of describing the origins of ska, it's development in England, and rather complicated ties to the mod and skinhead subcultures. He's also brimming with details about the major bands and why it all fell apart so quickly. Two quibbles do present themselves. One is that some of the transitions are a bit choppy, and I later learned that the US edition I read is an abridged version of the UK edition (nowhere is this obviously stated on the US edition). Some 300+ pages were cut, which would explain some of the choppiness I found, and I have to say that I'll be buying the more expensive UK version for my friends. The second reservation I have with the book is the total lack of documentation. It's great to quote Dammers, Hall, Staple, and all these other musicians, but it would be nice to know where these quotes came from so that one could do follow-up reading or research -- there's not even a bibliography! These cavaets of abrdigement and referencing aside, this appears to be an excellent, well-written account of an overlooked era of music history and should stand as the definitive work for many years to come.

The Bible of Postpunk

This has been one of my favorite books for years. Simon Reynolds finds a way to tie the disparate threads of independent experimentation and unbridled newness of the Postpunk era (1978-1984, formally) into an acceptable narrative thread that's as engaging as it is informative. I cannot recommend this book any higher.

It's well-researched and well-written - that much we can all agree on - but I think the writing is a bit dry. This book has been sitting next to "Please Kill Me: the uncensored oral history of punk" on my bookshelf for nearly a year, and I can only read a chapter or two at a time. I've tried reading "Rip it Up" several times, but it lacks the energy and compulsive readability of its shelf-mate. I sorely want to read this book, but my mind starts wandering every time I start reading it...it feels kind of like homework. It just lacks the energy of the music it describes.

Ms. Burton earned her B.B.A. from Lamar University and her M.B.E. from University of North Texas.

Nelda Shelton received her B.S. and M.B.E. degrees from the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. She has taught full-time in the Business and Office Administration Departments of Tarrant County College, South Campus in Fort Worth, Texas. Ms. Shelton's teaching experience encompasses business math, business communications, office procedures, and introduction to accounting both in the classroom and distance learning via the Internet. She has worked part time for the U. S. Office of Personnel Management as a trainer and as an independent contractor. She has also served as a part-time instructor the Dallas County Community College District. Ms. Shelton has co-authored several successful texts in areas of business and office administration.
