Anyone seriously committed to the investigation of the mechanics of healing, needs this book as a guide to the process of what happens both to the patient and the physician in the healing interchange. Clearly taking the Ageless wisdom view, clarified further by his unique ability to delve into the soul of man, his vehicles of expression on the earth, this book\manual weaves a rich tapestry of both subjective and objective approaches to a otherwise complex system which begs the reader to know himself and his patient in this wonderful exchange of evolutionary interchange between patient, physician, and the human soul. Not for the faint hearted, this 900 page volume gives that quantum leap required to establish the more serious reader to higher levels of the mental plane where true healing takes place. Full of exercises and examples, physicians would do well to apply these to their practices, allowing their patients to evolve to their highest potential in this lifetime, and to ultimately become responsible for their own health and healing.

Good Overview of Panamanian History

This is a good historical overview of a nation that has impacted the world's economy since the American built canal was opened in 1914.

Yet there is still a bit of ignorance about Panama. This book correctly points out that Panama was for a short period fully independent of Colombia. Panama joined Gran Colombia under the leadership of Simon Bolivar.

Later when Gran Colombia was dissolved, Panama was enticed to remain part of Colombia on being promised a large degree of autonomy. That promise was quickly ignored.

Thus up to 1903 when Panama with heavy support from President Theodore Roosevelt separated from Colombia, Panama had no less than 82 uprisings against the domineering Bogota government.

In short, Panama was an ignored and even an abused part of Colombia for about 80 years. This book addresses that reality and others quite effectively.

For more academically sound information, readers may want to explore the historical treasure trove at the Panama Canal Museum housed at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.

NB: Dr. Mellander has a Ph.D. in Latin American history and has written several books on Panama.

All the basics on Panamanian History

Lots I didn't know about Panama. That is likely true for most of us. A great first read. This is more of a basic guide but you can go on and read more Panamanian history with the lengthy list of resource materials Mr. Harding provides. For those more "canal specific" interests, the best book out there is David McCullough's wonderful "Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal". About the Author

Stuart Shanker is a Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at York University. Dr. Shanker is currently serving as Director of the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) at York University, a privately funded initiative whose goal is to build on new knowledge of the brain’s development, and help set children (including those with developmental disorders) on the path towards emotional and intellectual health.

 

Dr. Shanker has just been appointed the Director of EPIC: an international initiative created to promote the educational potential in children by enhancing their self-regulation. He has served as the Director of the Council of Human Development for the past ten years; Director of the Canada-Cuba Research Alliance for the past six years; and he was the first President of the Council of Early Child Development in Canada. Over the past decade he has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and countries around the world, among them Australia, Colombia, England, Ireland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Peru, Romania and Serbia. Most notable among these is his involvement in the creation of the new early learning program in Ontario (viz. "The Pascal Report," for which he also wrote the preface).

Self-regulation is a matter for adults working with /caring for children as much as the children themselves!

Very easy to access this book and dip in and out for wisdom.
Particularly relevant for those working with children placed in out of home care.
Shared elements on recent multi-professional training and a forum - well received - provides another lens for supporting children with complex needs. I particularly liked emphasis on adults around the children modelling their own self-regulation and how we need to do a lot of personal development ourselves if we are going to commence or continue to work with this group of children.

I Advocate We the People of the United States Rather than Diversity.

The authors would advance John Rawls's liberal political thought, using what they regard as lofty terms, to bemuse innocent readers. But I think they confound themselves.

For example, quoting Page 2, governance they propose "appreciates the value of diversity in our morally pluralistic constitutional democracy." I exclude myself from their "our" because I appreciate a republican form of government--the rule of law--and adamantly oppose "democracy." I oppose "diversity," which contradicts We the People of the United States as defined in the preamble to the US Constitution.

Again on Page 2, they propose "toleration as respect, together with the capacity for responsibility and the substantive moral goods furthered by securing such rights." I adamantly oppose both toleration and respect, especially if directed toward my opinion: I require appreciation, because my opinion is hard earned opinion.

I want to fulfill the preamble to the US Constitution, which I paraphrase as follows: Citizens who want to fulfill seven stated goals govern the United States of America. The preamble defines proponents: We the People of the United States. I consider the seven goals as stated specific to 1788, when the preamble was ratified by the nine required states. The single word adaptations I propose for 2014 are: integrity, justice, civility, defense, diligence, liberty, and continuity. I want to debate these ideas with US citizens, not with the world's diversity for now.

I consider this book helpful in considering the liberal mind, which I oppose to favor We the People of the United States.
