Richard Blum has worked in the IT industry for more than 30 years as a network and systems administrator, managing Microsoft, Unix, Linux, and Novell servers for a network with more than 3,500 users. He has developed and teaches programming and Linux courses via the Internet to colleges and universities worldwide. Rich has a master’s degree in management information systems from Purdue University and is the author of several Linux books, including Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible (coauthored with Christine Bresnahan); Linux for Dummies, Ninth Edition; and Professional Linux Programming (coauthored with Jon Masters). When he’s not busy being a computer nerd, Rich enjoys spending time with his wife, Barbara, and two daughters, Katie Jane and Jessica.

Best Programming introduction to the Raspberry Pi using Python

The Raspberry Pi is emerging as a powerful experimental computer that is capturing the public interest. Its usage covers the spectrum from robot vehicles to wearable recording cameras to home security devices to media servers. The primary software language for the Pi is Python. This book gives the reader the ability to configure the software on the Pi to use Python effectively.

The book begins with the OS system setup then moves into installing the Python interpreter. Python 3 is the language used by the IDLE 3 IDE and the code examples are based in this version. The book covers both Python scripting from the command line and building actual Python programs.

Several chapters are devoted to explaining the use of various internal data types before moving on to using files. By chapter 13 the design of functions and function containers are covered. Chapters 14 and 15 cover Python classes and inheritance. The fun part starts in chapter 18 with GUI programming and the next chapter introduces game programming and its support libraries. The next three chapters get serious with Network( 20 ), Databases( 21 ), Webservers( 22 ). Chapter 23 covers displaying photo images. Finally, Chapter 24 gets into controlling the electronic signals on the GPIO pins using the Gertboard.

Having read six other books on the Raspberry Pi, I think that this book is a very good introduction to programming on the Pi. If you haven't done any software programming, this book could be a very comfortable introduction to software design on a very versatile platform. Once you get the experience of working on the projects contained here you will be ready to handling serious product design using C, C++ or assembly language.

I'm glad that I bought this book to help me understand how to setup the Pi system and design test software for it.

Good beginner's book for learning Python 3 (and Raspberry Pi)

Background: This is the 2nd Python book I have read from "Sam's Teach Yourself ... in 24 hours" series. (The other being Sams Teach Yourself Python in 24 Hours (2nd Edition)). Similar to the other book, the format of the book is excellent. Each chapter is short and clear, and there are a lot of reinforcement (exercises, Q&A, quiz) to guide the reader.

Some of the highlights:
Part 1: Basics of Raspberry Pi: hardware overview and how to set up software for development.
Part 2: Python fundamentals
Part 3: Advanced topics such as tuples, list, dictionary, set. Working with modules and classes. Plus an excellent chapter on regular expressions.
Part 5: Network programming fundamentals and accessing the database. The chapter on web programming is a little weak, however.
Part 6: Basic Python programming with Raspberry Pi using GPIO pins.

Overall it’s a fantastic book recommended for beginners to learn Python programming — with or without Raspberry Pi. Pretty much all of the examples work in any desktop environment. Excellent value considering it’s over 550+ page.

On the other hand, if you are already familiar with Raspberry Pi & Python and is looking for a book to build “projects” — then this is probably not what you are looking for.

Right down the middle. Gives you enough background to know how it was designed, and then step by step directions for installing and configuring software packages on the Pi. My goal was moving data into mysql from python from files; its all right there.

Great book on Dart

This book is a valuable resource to anyone looking into Dart development.

Not only is it well writen but the code examples are pretty interesting, you'll go from learning the basics of the language to more advanced topics like Futures and Isolates and you'll even see how to develop your own Dart MVC framework.

Most of all this book is very easy to read and get you straight into Dart development. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn Dart and even to more experienced users since the author's examples are more than interesting.

This book is a great idea and actually pretty well written from a readability standpoint, hence three stars. Unfortunately dart has changed out from under the book and it needs a revision. Once its updated, it might be a great quick intro to the language. But I advise you to save your money until 1.0.

I have read several guides now from erotica writers on how to be successful. Typically, they all focus on the same things. The difference between them comes with clarity in text. Amy's guide is that clarity. The layout and text itself are easy to read. All her tips are written in simple to understand language and she emphasizes that this is what worked for her. You take what you bring to writing and the tips that work for you. I appreciate that this guide focuses mostly on self publishing to Amazon since this is the only place I am interested in exploring. An Absolute MUST for any Die-Hard Tolkien Fan

I've tried reading this book on several occasions, but have always been forced to put it down. As a college student, life can get pretty busy. By the time I finally got around to picking up where I left off, I had trouble remembering what was happening in the narrative. The Silmarillion's rich and complicated writing style is certainly not for the casual fan. However, that does not mean it isn't worth reading. This is the lore of Tolkien's world, it's beginnings, it's troubles, and the people who inhabit it. It's darker than either of Tolkien's more popular works, "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings", and I'd say that's a good thing. The drama is compelling, the language is beautiful, and the characters, while not entirely fleshed out (this isn't a novel, it's a book of lore), are interesting throughout. If you want to know more about Tolkien's epic and breathtaking creation, as well as get all the subtle references to the past sprinkled throughout "The Lord of the Rings", then this book is for you.

Reads like the bible in the beginning of every chapter and like the lord of the rings 3/4 of the way through each chapter. The names of any of the valar would make awesome band names. The nonsensical-sounding LOTR-speak in the movies makes perfect sense after reading this. names, origins, geographic regions, the dark feeling covering everything, all explained.

But really, in all honesty, you'll never REALLY and truly understand The Lord of the Rings trilogy, or for that matter, most of The Hobbit if you're not at least marginally familiar with The Silmarillion. It's a tough nut to crack at first, it reads a little like the Old Testament (which Tolkien was trying to avoid, read the forwards) but once the begats are over and the stories of how the world came to be begin, you'll be hooked and I was honestly pained to put it down to do things like sleep and go to work.

Chef at New York's Les Halles and author of Bone in the Throat, Bourdain pulls no punches in this memoir of his years in the restaurant business. His fast-lane personality and glee in recounting sophomoric kitchen pranks might be unbearable were it not for two things: Bourdain is as unsparingly acerbic with himself as he is with others, and he exhibits a sincere and profound love of good food. The latter was born on a family trip to France when young Bourdain tasted his first oyster, and his love has only grown since. He has attended culinary school, fallen prey to a drug habit and even established a restaurant in Tokyo, discovering along the way that the crazy, dirty, sometimes frightening world of the restaurant kitchen sustains him. Bourdain is no presentable TV version of a chef; he talks tough and dirty. His advice to aspiring chefs: "Show up at work on time six months in a row and we'll talk about red curry paste and lemon grass. Until then, I have four words for you: 'Shut the fuck up.' " He disdains vegetarians, warns against ordering food well done and cautions that restaurant brunches are a crapshoot. Gossipy chapters discuss the many restaurants where Bourdain has worked, while a single chapter on how to cook like a professional at home exhorts readers to buy a few simple gadgets, such as a metal ring for tall food. Most of the book, however, deals with Bourdain's own maturation as a chef, and the culmination, a litany describing the many scars and oddities that he has developed on his hands, is surprisingly beautiful. He'd probably hate to hear it, but Bourdain has a tender side, and when it peeks through his rough exterior and the wall of four-letter words he constructs, it elevates this book to something more than blustery memoir. 10/10 career chefs should read.

This book is fantastic. I've been looking for something that explains how I should work as a line cook and this book exceeded my expectations. Anthony Bourdain explains in such detail not simply what is expected but how to exceed expectations. He lays out a spectrum before your very eyes that encompasses the lowest and the greatest of the industry and gives you a bar to reach and exceed. This is definitely a book for someone new to the industry and will help me as I continue my career.

Incredible book about all there is to know in the food industry

This book is incredible and touches on just about everything that happens in the restaurant industry. Not only will you learn about all the ups and downs but you'll also get to understand what chefs do that makes their food better then your typical "house" meal as well as what it takes to learn the discipline of surviving in the industry.

Its a good read for those who want to enter the business

Very entertaining it gives you a realistic insight of how Anthony Bourdain got his foot in the door and managed to be the success he is now in spite of the social culture of the era. Its a very NYC story. It's also a glimpse of how hard work is essential in order to be a chef . Its a good read for those who want to enter the business.
